Fueled by their late-game surge in their suspended match against the University of the Philippines last Sunday, Adamson carried their momentum into their clash with the Blue Eagles, delivering a six-run explosion in the fifth inning to seal the mercy-rule victory.
With the win, Adamson moves into a provisional third place in the standings with a 2-2 record. The San Marcelino-based team still has an unfinished game against UP, which was suspended due to unsuitable conditions at the venue, however, reports indicate that the game will only be resumed if it impacts the tournament's playoff race.
Head coach Lando Binarao acknowledged that if the team had played with the same intensity in previous games, they might not have suffered any losses, also expressing hope that they would maintain the same level of performance in the upcoming matches and the second round of the tournament.
Designated hitter Joao Severino sparked the offensive onslaught, delivering two hits in four at-bats, including a crucial RBI single that sent Lawrence Mercado home to extend Adamson’s lead to 4-0.
Severino’s hit opened the floodgates for Adamson, as Ivan Jonson followed up with a two-run single, plating Severino and Kurt Cabanillas, while John Matanguihan and John Mark Tupig also contributed to the relentless attack, racking up multiple hits to dismantle Ateneo’s pitching.
Rookie pitcher James Nisnisan, meanwhile, dominated, allowing just two hits, shutting down Ateneo’s offense. The Baguio City native was backed by stellar fielding, highlighted by a critical third-inning double play executed by Jonson, Mercado, and Matanguihan to stifle an Ateneo scoring opportunity.
