The University’s College of Law, in collaboration with the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) - Adamson, hosted a special free screening of the award-winning Cinemalaya documentary film Alipato at Muog, December 5, at the Adamson University Theatre.

Directed by JL Burgos, Alipato at Muog earned the Special Jury Award at the 2024 Cinemalaya Film Festival. The documentary highlights the abduction of Jonas Burgos, a farmer-activist forcibly taken by state forces in 2007, as seen through the lens of his youngest brother – the film’s director. It delves into the issues of human rights and enforced disappearances, reflecting a continuous call to social justice and awareness.

The event was followed by a talkback session with the film's acclaimed director, JL Burgos, his mother, human rights advocate Dr. Edita Burgos, and human rights lawyer Atty. Katherine Panguban.

Dr. Burgos, a Martial Law survivor, human rights activist, and mother of Jonas Burgos also gave her takes, also banking on her experiences as one of the leaders of Desaparecidos, an organization supporting families of enforced disappearance victims, and her storied past as a press freedom advocate during Martial Law.

During the discussions, JL Burgos emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the issue of enforced disappearances, adding that the film was created not just to tell a story, but to invite others to join their cause and amplify their voices, and that it is silence which allows such injustices to persist.

In addition, Dr. Burgos further amplified her younger son’s call, as she delves into her experiences and contemplations.

The event continues to foster the University’s commitment to nurturing dialogue on critical social issues while providing its students and community with opportunities to engage with expects and those who actually experienced issues of the society at large and enhance understanding of human rights and social responsibility among students.

Students, faculty, and staff attended the event.
