Mr. Gabriel Plegaria’s deep faith and connection to the Blessed Mother have been vital in him helping communities embrace Marian devotion. He believes that patience and persistence are key to overcoming the challenges of spreading this devotion. As the current adviser of the Children of Mary organization in Adamson’s Basic Education Department, he fosters a spirit of openness and humility, encouraging the community to explore various expressions of devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.
In gratitude for the blessings and miracles he has received through the Blessed Mother’s intercession, his commitment to teaching is his way of giving back, hoping his words resonate with students and inspire them to be humble and compassionate individuals.
Mr. Gabriel also recognizes that some students may not fully grasp the many forms of Marian devotion. While children may participate in praying the rosary, reciting prayers, or making offerings, they may still harbor doubts. For him, this is a privilege rather than a challenge, as it gives him the opportunity to listen and clarify their uncertainties. His dedication to Christian living fuels his desire to help them understand the meaningful relevance of these practices.
“Merong mga instances especially mga students na doubtful. Doubtful sila pero ang turo nga sa atin, tiyagain mo [pero] huwag mo siyang pipilitin. I-encourage mo siya until na ma-realize nila na, ‘I want to try this’. After they try, they [will] feel na, 'Oo nga, totoo ‘yung sinasabi ni Sir Gab’,” he shared.
For him, it is crucial as a teacher at the Basic Education Department to deal with children through gentle and considerate forms of communication where they feel safe and understood.
“‘Yun ‘yung isang magandang practice natin na hindi natin pinipilit ‘yung bata sa devotion, but, we introduce them. [We introduce them to] the devotion, then, let them experience ‘yung personal experience.”
As his students embark on their learning journey, Mr. Gabriel carefully chooses words and examples that will inspire and guide them. His faith has helped him define his spiritual purpose: to positively shape students’ values and character.
He strives to foster a learning environment that is inclusive and responsive to each student’s unique identity and level of understanding. This approach nurtures a positive mindset and deep spirituality in his students. In sharing the significance of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, he gives reassurance that faith can be a source of strength for hopes and aspirations.
