Ms. Liezel Abrea, a faculty member of the university’s Psychology Department, recently had her research paper, titled Development and Validation of the Filipino Parentification Scale for College Students, published in Current Psychology, a renowned journal indexed in both Scopus and Web of Science.

The study, which delves into the concept of parentification—the process by which children take on adult responsibilities within the family—specifically examines how this phenomenon manifests among Filipino college students.

Parentification is a psychological phenomenon often associated with caregiving roles that children assume for their parents or siblings, sometimes leading to emotional and psychological burdens. In her research, Abrea has developed and validated a Filipino-specific scale that can better assess the impact of parentification on college students, a significant and often overlooked demographic in psychological research.

This achievement is another milestone for Abrea and the Psychology Department as it highlights the department's ongoing contributions to the field of psychology. Abrea’s work is especially relevant in the context of Filipino culture, where familial duties often play a central role in the lives of young adults.

Through her research, she has created a tool that will aid in better understanding the psychological and emotional toll parentification may have on students, helping mental health professionals, educators, and family therapists to better address and support those who are affected.
