The Cultural Affairs Office proudly unveiled Artful Return, an exhibit by alumnus John Mercado Cesar, at the University Gallery, November 7.
The exhibit, which encapsulates themes of resilience, hope, and community, was a tribute to Cesar's transformative journey from psychology graduate to an accomplished artist. He also honored his Vincentian roots as part of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to the University’s community extension efforts and ANAWIM, a home for abandoned elders in Rizal Province.
University President Fr. Daniel Franklin Pilario, CM, opened the ceremony, reflecting on Adamson’s commitment to cultivating talent across disciplines.
“Adamson University is not famous for the arts; we don’t even have a course on fine arts… yet, beauty is also part of science. Science is not just about inventions and molecules; it brings out beauty in us,” he said.
“This is an example because the one who exhibits today is also an Adamsonian. He was a psychology graduate, but inside his heart is the proclamation of beauty,” he continued. “If you graduate from a course here, you can do anything,” he shared, recognizing Cesar’s achievements.
For Cesar, returning to his alma mater with his exhibit was deeply meaningful. “This afternoon is incredibly meaningful as it unfolds here at my beloved alma mater, Adamson University—a place that laid the foundation for who I am and where I am now,” he expressed, attributing his path to Adamson’s influence on his growth.
Cesar’s journey from an Adamsonian psychology graduate to artist and HR manager in an international firm has been marked by resilience and passion -- a message he conveys in his craft.
“Through Artful Return, I hope to share not only my artwork but also a message of resilience, positivity, and hope,” Cesar explained.
“This gathering is about community, connection, and sharing our stories,” he continued, looking over the crowd of fellow Adamsonians, mentors, and friends. “Having you here makes this celebration all the more special.”
Cesar’s work demonstrated Adamson’s unique influence, celebrating the beauty found in diversity, perseverance, and community. Fr. Pilario emphasized this sentiment, describing the gallery as “very small, but also a place of beauty for the whole university.” This event, he added, is a testament to the university’s mission to foster beauty in all its forms, including artistic expression.
The exhibit will be open until November 20, inviting the Adamson community and beyond to celebrate this special milestone.
In Cesar’s words, “I hope that through my art, you find reflections of joy, compassion, and connection, and are reminded of the transformative power that art and community bring to our lives.”
