Adamson University’s softball team continued to assert their dominance in the Asian Universities Women Softball Asia Cup 2024, thrashing Singapore and South Korea in consecutive shutouts during their double-header game yesterday at the Taichung International Field in Taiwan.
The Lady Falcons, currently on a remarkable four-game win streak, blanked South Korea 7-0 and then delivered another solid 6-0 victory against Singapore. The team’s lone defeat came in their opener when they bowed to Japan, 2-1.
With a 4-1 card, the girls in blue are in joint-second place with Japan in the single round elimination tourney.
Leading the charge for the Philippines’ representatives were pitching aces Glory Alonzo, April Minanga, and Jane Marie Sigue, whose combined efforts have secured four shutout victories in the tournament so far.
Adamson's clash against Singapore saw a slow start, but the team eventually found their rhythm in the fourth inning. Reyae Villamin's patience at the plate earned her a key walk, followed by another intentional walk for Alaiza Talisik.
Neomay Mahinay then connected with a crucial base hit, scoring Villamin and giving the Lady Falcons their first run. A string of consistent hits followed, leading to runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The seventh inning was a breakout moment, with back-to-back triples from MJ Maguad and Talisik, plating three runners—Roma Jane Cruz, Remilie Herrero, and Maguad herself—ultimately putting the game out of reach.
Sigue started on the mound for the Philippines against the South Koreans, with Alonzo closing out the game in another outstanding combined effort.
The Lady Falcons capitalized on early momentum, with Mahinay scoring in the third inning off a single by Angelu Gabriel. Herrero’s double soon after brought in MJ Libaton and Mae Langga, widening the gap to 3-0. The Falcons secured two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to cap off another strong performance.
With the crucial victories, the Ana Santiago-mentored squad has secured a strong position heading into their final elimination round match against Chinese Taipei, where a spot in the gold medal match will be at stake.
