Adamson’s badminton teams put up a valiant effort but fell short against the University of Santo Tomas, as both the men’s and women’s squads were handed 1-4 defeats in UAAP Season 87 action.
On the men’s side, Adamson’s lone victory came from Nathan Acedillo, who impressed with a 21-15, 21-14 win over UST rookie John Vincent Espinoza in the final singles match, averting a shutout for the Falcons.
UST, though, secured wins in the earlier ties, with Ivan Angelo Tuazon overpowering Jhon Dema-ano in straight sets, 21-13, 21-11, and Lennox Cuilao clinching two victories—first in singles against Heaven Linaban (21-18, 21-12) and then in the second doubles tie with Bien Miraflor, defeating Gabrielle Ganoy and Noel Hernandez, Jr. (22-20, 21-13).
The first doubles match proved to be a tough battle for Adamson, as Yuan Tan and Miguel Cuarte fought hard but ultimately succumbed to reigning MVP Arthur Salvado, Jr. and Rookie of the Year Lance Vargas, 21-17, 21-13.
In the women’s division, the San Marcelino shuttlers’ standout performance came from Key Fuerte, who delivered a decisive 21-14, 21-15 victory over Angelina Vitangcol in the second singles match, putting the Lady Falcons on the scoreboard.
However, UST managed to take control of the day’s other matches, with reigning three-time MVP Mika De Guzman and rookie Althea Dawn Ocampo outlasting Viana Antonio and Mia Manguilimotan in a thrilling 63-minute showdown, 17-21, 21-11, 21-16.
Despite Fuerte’s win, the Lady Falcons couldn’t fend off UST’s momentum as Jennifer Saladaga and Rhafi Santos cruised past Camille Buagas and Graziel Cabriga, 21-10, 21-16, and Reshane Nicor sealed the deal with a debut win over Aleyha Villanueva, 21-11, 11-21, 21-10, in the final match.
The Falcons will look to regroup and bounce back in the coming fixtures as they continue to fight for a strong finish in the tournament.
