Adamson University’s high school chess teams delivered strong performances in the early rounds of the UAAP Season 87 Chess Tournament, with both the boys' and girls' divisions securing key victories.
The Soaring Falcons’ boys’ team opened their campaign with a commanding 3-1 win against Ateneo High School. Allan Dolfo and Jian Bautista led the charge with victories on Boards 1 and 4, defeating Ateneo’s Jose Caro and Marc Justin Fua.
Raemund Bandejas and Jonver Acosta contributed solid draws on Boards 2 and 3, securing Adamson’s early triumph. The win placed Adamson in second place with 3.0 match points after Round 1.
However, Adamson faced a setback in Round 2 against the University of Santo Tomas. Despite strong efforts, Dolfo and Bautista fell to Sumer Oncita and John Cyrus Borce on Boards 1 and 3.
Acosta and Bryce Bayani managed to hold UST’s Karlycris Clarito Jr. and Jina Carlo Rivera to draws on Boards 2 and 4, but UST emerged with a 3-1 victory. After two rounds, the boys’ team remains competitive with 4.0 match points, just behind Far Eastern University-Diliman (FEU-D), who leads with 7.5.
In the girls' division, Adamson blanked De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) with an impressive 4-0 shutout, tying for second place with National University Nazareth School.
Lira Placer, Christen Reyes, Florence Isabedra, and Ma. Christina Samarita showcased their skills, winning decisively on all four boards against DLSZ. This dominant performance bolstered the Lady Falcons’ standing, with 4.0 match points heading into Round 3.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams will return to the board on Saturday, October 19, aiming to climb higher in the standings and build on their early successes.
