Adamson University held its annual Welcome Celebration for International Students this September 28 at the Admiral Hotel in Manila. With the theme “Building Bridges for Peace,” the event marked a day of unity and cultural exchange.

The celebration was graced by representatives from at least 13 embassies and consulates in the Philippines, along with student-representatives from more than 30 nations.

Sr. Maruja Padre Juan, MSCS, Director of the Office for University Relations (International Linkages & Global Engagement), delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of cultural relationships in promoting global peace.

“Let us take this evening to celebrate the diversity, unity, and friendship that define our Adamson international community. Together we are building bridges for peace,” she said.

A Prayer for Peace, led by former ISAAD Chancellor Bethesda Njoku, set a reflective tone for the event.

This was followed by a captivating performance from the Adamson University Dance Company, showcasing Filipino culture through a Philippine tableau.

Meanwhile, in his welcome remarks, Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM, Vice-President for Student Affairs, who represented University President Fr. Daniel Franklin Pilario, CM, underscored the role of diversity in Vincentian education.

“As international students, you bring a unique perspective and cultural richness to our campus in Adamson. Your presence not only strengthens our objectives both as programs and as institutions, but also challenges our limited worldview of humanity,” said Fr. Suan.

He further emphasized the concept of "klasmeyt" at Adamson University, describing it as an expression of an inclusive community.

"The word 'classmate' is our bridge connecting with each other. Your presence in the community reaffirms the inclusive and all-embracing values of the Vincentian mission and traditions," he continued.

On the other hand, Mr. Marcos Octavio Vara Jacobo, Head of Cultural Affairs and International Cooperation from the Embassy of Mexico in the Philippines delivered the keynote speech, on behalf of H.E. Ambassador Daniel Hernandez Joseph.

He spoke about the shared responsibility of nations in fostering peace through education and cultural collaboration.

"Our gathering today, centered on building bridges for peace, echoes the spirit of the galleon trip," he said, referring to the historical maritime route that once connected Mexico and the Philippines.

“In the same way, you, a diverse assembly of young minds, are united by a shared voyage towards a more just and peaceful world.”

Mr. Jacobo then likened the international students to explorers of the past, emphasizing their potential to navigate challenges, build connections, and create a lasting impact on global harmony.

He also highlighted education as a key foundation for peace, fostering empathy, understanding, and respect for diverse cultures and beliefs.

“Within the hallowed halls of academia, you will forge lifelong friendships, exchange ideas, and challenge new perspectives, shaping your worldview and equipping you to become agents of positive change,” he said.

The event also featured the oath taking ceremony of the new officers of ISAAD, headed by the new Chancellor Mervin Mario Simons, who expressed gratitude for the university’s continuous support to international students.
