Adamson’s Lady Falcons made a strong statement in their UAAP 87 debut, defeating Far Eastern University (FEU) 76-63 this September 8 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Taking advantage of the suspension of FEU’s foreign student-athlete Josee Kaputu, the Lady Falcons capitalized on both ends of the floor as Cheska Apag, Elaine Etang, and Kat Agojo led a crucial 13-2 run in the third quarter, turning a narrow three-point lead into a 14-point cushion, 53-39.
FEU managed to counter with their own 8-1 blast but was quickly pacified with another 12-2 surge from Agojo, Apag, Kemi Adeshina, and Angeline Alaba, extending the lead to 17 points en route to the win for the San Marcelino side.
“For us, the first game is always the hardest,” said head coach Ryan Monteclaro, now in his second year.
“There are jitters and excitement, but we wanted to make a statement, and winning our first game was exactly that.”
Apag delivered an impressive all-around performance, tallying 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
With Kaputu sidelined, newly minted team captain Adeshina dominated the paint with 16 rebounds and 10 points.
Elaine Etang added nine points, six rebounds, and six assists, while Agoko and Angela Alaba had seven markers apiece.
Adamson’s next test will be against De La Salle University this Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the venue.
