Despite the shift to online classes brought by massive flooding amid Typhoon Enteng, Adamson University’s sports teams took center stage last September 6 as the university community gathered for a Pep Rally at the SV Gymnasium to send them off for their respective campaigns in the 87th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
The event began with a send-off mass led by University Chaplain Fr. John Khongsai, CM, and AdU President Fr. Daniel Franklin Pilario, CM. In his homily, Fr. Khongsai encouraged the athletes to embody resilience, discipline, and teamwork as they embark on their UAAP journey.
Following the mass, Fr. Aldrin Suan opened the Pep Rally, welcoming both the athletes and the Adamson community, which participated both onsite and online as the event was also streamed via the University Facebook Page after classes were shifted to online synchronous modality.
A ceremonial turnover was also held, with UAAP 87 hosts University of the Philippines represented by softball players Nickole dela Cruz passing a symbolic torch to newly minted Adamson Women’s Volleyball skipper Shaina Nitura.
Meanwhile, in his message, Fr. Pilario emphasized Adamson’s core values— Competence, Character, and Charity—inspiring the athletes to carry these virtues in their competitions and beyond.
The rally featured an opening performance by gymnast Elaiza Yulo, who recently dominated the Palarong Pambansa while representing the National Capital Region.
Yulo’s performance was followed by the recognition of athletes excelling in non-UAAP sports, including gymnasts herself and her brother, Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships gold medalist Karl Eldrew, Wushu World Champion Jones Inso, and Philippine national team bowler Grace Gella.
Adamson’s UAAP student-athletes were then grouped into three clusters for presentations. The first performers included athletes from events such as Athletics, Lawn Tennis, Baseball, Football, and Men’s Volleyball.
The next set featured routines from teams for Dance Sports, Chess, Table Tennis, Boys Volleyball, and Women’s Basketball. Finally, the last showcase had the Girls' Volleyball, Women’s Volleyball, Softball, Boys Basketball, and Men’s Basketball teams.
Special performances were also given by Aleya Eser, who sang Nosi Balasi and Huling El Bimbo, adding excitement to the rally. The University’s Esports team and newly established Judo team also made appearances.
The event closed with a lively performance from the AUDYO and Pep Squad, who energized the crowd with Adamson cheers, setting the tone for the upcoming season.
