University President Fr. Daniel Franklin Pilario, CM, represented Adamson University in the covenant signing of GMA Network’s “Panata Kontra Fake News” advocacy campaign, which was held at Studio 7 of GMA Network on August 30.
The event, which took place alongside the celebration of National Press Freedom Day, brought together academic and media organizations committed to combating the widespread misinformation among Filipinos.
It featured the signing of a covenant by nearly 60 partners, including major Philippine media organizations, social media platforms, and academic institutions.
“Fake news is both dangerous and harmful, but the truth is glorious and useful. It fosters an informed populace, essential for a functioning democracy and a stronger society,” GMA Network Chairman Atty. Felipe Gozon said, emphasizing the campaign's significance.
Gozon further stressed the urgency of this initiative, especially with the approaching midterm elections in 2025.
“If fake candidates, fake promises, and fake spending dominate the elections, we will end up electing fake leaders,” he explained, adding that fake news undermines democracy by leading to poor electoral decisions.
Adamson University, a Vincentian institution guided by the motto Veritas in Caritate (Truth in Charity), aligns with this national initiative to promote truth and integrity.
The University’s participation reflects its dedication to upholding the principles of honesty and transparency, particularly when misinformation poses a severe threat to society.
