Adamson University, through the Cultural Affairs Office and in partnership with the Pangkasaysayang Samahan ng Adamson University (PASADU), hosted a forum featuring “Filipino Heroes: From the Perspective of the Current Generation,” August 19 at the University Theater.
The lecture – AdU and PASADU’s way of celebrating National Heroes Month -- featured renowned public historian Prof. Michale Charleston “Xiao” Chua.
Prof. Chua explored the evolving concept of heroism and its relevance in modern times. He emphasized that heroism should not be rigidly defined by legal or political means.
“Ang depinisyon ng National Heroes Commission ay hindi itinakda... Walang batas na nag-oobliga sa atin na pumili ng pambansang bayani,” Chua pointed out, stressing that there is no official law confirming national heroes like Jose Rizal.
Prof. Chua also argued against formalizing heroism through legislation, saying, “Walang batas na dapat magpatibay ng kabayanihan. Dahil kung ang isang batas ay makakapagpatibay ng kabayanihan, kahit sino ay pwedeng maging bayani dahil lang may bilang sila sa Kongreso.”
"No law should confirm heroism. Because if a law can confirm heroism, then any Tom, Dick, and Harry can become a hero just because they have numbers in Congress."
Furthering his discussion, Prof. Chua delved into the modern perspective on heroism in modern times.
He pointed out “qualifications” that can make one a hero – a bayani -- including patriotism, bravery, empathy, leadership, martyrdom, and even extends to presence in films and coinage.
“Ang konsepto ng bayani sa henerasyon ngayon ay iba. Mas nagre-reflect yung good,” he said.
The forum also provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on and exchange opinions and questions about contemporary views of heroism and how it differs from historical perspectives, namely on how modern heroes are perceived today.
College of Education and Liberal Arts Dean Dr. Gliceria Nunag delivered the opening remarks for the event, while Social Science Department Chairperson Mr. Adrian Zulueta also gave his thoughts on the event’s theme.
PASADU President Ralph Ryanne Buenaventura gave the students’ response to Prof. Chua’s lecture before the event concluded.
