The Soaring Falcons shrugged off a slow start en route to a three-set 27-25, 25-15, 25-22 victory over the University of the Philippines, in the UAAP 86 Men’s Volleyball Tournament, February 24, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Adamson was caught off guard of the onslaught uncorked by UP’s Louis Gamban who paced his side with a double-digit scoring performance in the first set, Adamson, though, was able to stay afloat and drew first blood after UP committed a hitting error that capped off the set for the Soaring Falcons, 27-25.

“Masyado lang na-excite siguro yung mga players. Compose muna kung gusto natin manalo,” commented Soaring Falcons head coach George Pascua on his team’s tight first set.

The San Marcelino crew then unleashed a block party in the second set to tally a 17-9 advantage midway of the second. Adamson registered seven blocks in the set.

The Falcons led by six through the third, 19-13, when Brian Chavez, Clarence Santiago, and Jaivee Malabanan connived for UP while also getting help from Adamson’s unforced errors to inch within one, 18-19.

AdU’s rookie setter Lourenz Domingo and second-year middle blocker Leo Coguimbal, however, provided the answers for the Soaring Falcons to finish the match in 74 minutes.

With the win, Adamson barged into the win column with a 1-1 card. Their two victories in the previous season also came against UP.

“Sa NU po na next po naming kalaban siguro po mas kailangan namin sila paghandaan kasi same po ng sinabi ni Coach George, na ang team nila is powerhouse. Kailangan lang po namin trabahuin kung ano ang tinuturo ng mga coaches namin, kasi sabi nga po nila kayang kaya po namin lahat nang teams ngayong season,” team captain Jude Aguilar shared, admitting they need to improve their receptions and services for their next match against reigning titlists, National University this February 28.

Aguilar chalked up 14 points in all, built on 11 attacks, three blocks and a service ace, while Mark Coguimbal contributed 11 markers. Rookie attacker Joel Menor also added nine points. Reports from Almira Coleen Montero
