Joem Sabandal assumed the closer role for the Soaring Falcons as he led his team to a cardiac 79-76 overtime victory over University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP 86 Men's Basketball Tournament, October 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The former Baby Falcon was scoreless for almost the whole game until he scored a turnaround jumper with 5.2 ticks left in the fourth frame to momentarily give the lead to Adamson, 68-66. King Tiger Nic Cabanero, though, hit an equalizing bucket to send the game into overtime.
Sabandal continued his onslaught, scoring seven of the Falcons’ nine points in the first four minutes of the extra period and pushing their lead to seven, 77-70.
Cabanero, though, hit back-to-back triples to pull his Tigers within one, with just 30 seconds remaining, 76-77.
Matthew Montebon was then fouled with 29 seconds left and split his charities, leaving a door open for UST, 78-76, but Christian Manaytay missed his shot on the other end that forced the Growling Tigers to foul Ced Manzano with less than 3 seconds left.
The Hua Siong College of Iloilo product split his free throws, giving UST one last shot but Migs Pangilinan's bail-out three rimmed out as time expired.
With the win, the Soaring Falcons registered their first victory to raise their record to 1-1.
Manzano led the San Marcelino crew in scoring with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Erolon added 11 points in only 13 minutes on the court. Sabandal, meanwhile, ended with nine points, six assists, and four rebounds.
Adamson will look to continue their winning ways when they play Ateneo de Manila University this October 7 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.
