Three Computer Engineering students landed as global finals of a Global Earth Observation (EO) Dashboard Hackathon sponsored by the leading Aerospace agencies in the world held last June 23 to 29.

Angelica Mhay Slazar, Karl Adrian de Guzman, and Joshua Bungcaras, who are doing their internships with data science company, CirroLytix Research Services, began making names for themselves after being part of the Geo-Intelligent Visualization of Earth Systems in Graphical and Historical Timelines (GiveSIGHT) initiative which was selected as one of the top projects in the event.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), European Space Agency (ESA), and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) sponsored and organized the event.

CirroLytix’ Emerging Technology Consultant Engr. Gabriel Kristopher Soong and Engr. Mark Barretto led the said project aiming to “improve the current EO dashboard by highlighting the significant changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic through visualizations and guided insight for prospective users.”

The proposed dashboard is intended to visualize the economic representations through nighlights, economic activities, and lockdown timelines in the Philippines.

At least 4,300 participants from 132 countries and territories joined the event that featured 233 proposed projects to solve challenges in relation with the pandemic through the use of EO Dashboard -- a resource that yields data that may be utilized to analyze effects of COVID-induced boundaries using the view from an Earth observation satellite.
