Cynthia Barker, the Adamson U alum who became the first Filipino mayor in England, passed away, September 14, her brother announced on social media.

"It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of The Worshipful Hertsmere Mayor Councillor Cynthia Barker following a bout of serious illness,” Gene Alcantara, brother of Barker, said in a Facebook post.

"We will be issuing further information in due course, but may we ask please to respect the family's privacy at this very difficult time. Your prayers for the repose of her soul would however be welcome," he added.

Barker, who finished with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Adamson U in 1984, was elected Mayor if Hertsmere borough, an administrative district in the United Kingdom last June 24.

The native of San Pablo was elected Councilor in 2015 and was chosen as deputy mayor last year.

Last 2017, Barker was recognized by the Filipina Women’s Network and was named as one of the 100 Most Influential Filipino Women of the World.

She left behind her daughter and four grandchildren.

Adamson U also joined the community in mourning Barker’s passing with posts in its social media accounts.

“The Adamson Community mourns the passing of alumna, Hon. Cynthia Barker, Mayor of Herstmere, England. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace,” the University wrote in its Facebook and Twitter accounts.
