The Psychology Department of Adamson University, headed by its chairperson Dr. Joseph Terell M. Malabuyo, conducted a seminar on Mental Health Awareness at the Adamson University Theater last March 16, 2019. It was held for the purpose of educating young minds about Mental Health, empowering them in the process and making them sensitive enough to understand the feelings of other people. The target participants were Psychology students from Adamson and other schools.

Dr. Gia Sison, a Filipino mental health advocate, was the invited speaker. She spoke about ways to develop mental health strength. One was the importance of having a true north, which means having a goal in life. Being someone else’s true north can also motivate one to keep going. She added further, “You should love yourself first before loving others.” In a one-sided relationship, Dr. Gia said that “if the person you love doesn’t love you back, it’s okay. Let your response be ‘thank you’.” The participants in the seminar said that they are happy and at the same time lucky because at least there were people who are still appreciating and understanding their thoughts, which can help them surpass all the challenges in life.

”It is hard to understand other people if you do not understand yourself first,” Dr. Malabuyo said during the event.

Meanwhile, the Psychology Department disclosed that their upcoming events include Psych Night in the month of May 2019 and a mock pre-board review and exam to help Psychology students who will be taking the board exam in October 2019. The department is targeting a 100% passing rate, which, given the high quality of education in Adamson is greatly possible.

Dr. Malabuyo also gave aspiring Psychology students these four advices: you need to have a goal, you need to be hardworking, you need to have persistence and you need to have focus. Jermaine Chloe De Leon, Mark Fiolo Espiritu, Jaleesa Nicole Olaguer, Frank Edward Ramos and Joseph Benedict Tria
