Volunteer group launches advocacy for campus cats

In response to the need for better treatment and care for the increasing number of stray cats in the campus, a volunteer group composed of administrators, faculty, staff and students held AdUCats: The Grand Launch at the Plaza de San Vicente last March 15, 2019. AdUCats, headed by its president Engr. Erison Roque, is advocating for the proper way to deal with the university’s animal co-inhabitants instead of getting rid of them.
During the short program, Mr. Nicole Jean Mercado, president of the Adamson University Student Government, led the opening prayer and Dr. Janice Ang, university physician, delivered the welcome remarks. AdUCats volunteer Ms. Lally Cabanela, who works at the Guidance Department as Placement Coordinator explained the rationale for the organization. An animal rescuer, she said that their advocacy was inspired by the De La Salle University Professors for the Upliftment of Society’s Animals (DLSU-PUSA). Although planned years ago, the interest in AdU cats somehow waned but was revived in September 2018 when a group of students linked up with her to raise awareness for the cats advocacy.
DLSU-PUSA founding member Dr. Mary Laureen Velasco was around to give support. She said that “Adamson is on the right path” as she looked forward to collaborating with the new group in the future. AdUCats volunteer and a cat lover Mr. Adrian Nathaniel Castillo gave four tips in his closing message on how to maintain love for cats. He used the acronym ADUC, which stands for Accept that people are not the only occupants of the habitat Earth; Decide that you need to take on a role; Unite in every little thing we do; and, Care, without which all of these will not be possible.
Fr. Raymond Regua, CM, former VP for Administration of Adamson, blessed the animals, some of which were already wearing tags. Some cats were also neutered.
Adamson University is hoping for the full cooperation of the entire community in fostering a harmonious coexistence of people and cats. Jermaine Chloe De Leon, Mark Fiolo Espiritu, Jaleesa Nicole Olaguer, Frank Edward Ramos and Joseph Benedict Tria
