Adamson University (AdU) snatched an almost sure victory by the University of the Philippines (UP) in their UAAP game held at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan, Metro Manila last September 26.
AdU’s thrilling 69-68 defeat of the UP Fighting Maroons stunned the UP team who led by as much as 10 points in the last canto and by a single point only in the dying seconds. With only 5.7 seconds left, Sean Manganti attempted a pass intended for Papi Sarr that was blocked by Bright Akhuetie. Luckily, Manganti recovered the ball in time to loft a shot that sent the Adamson gallery into wild celebration.
“Everybody can say that it was just a lucky win for us on a huge shot by Sean,” said Adamson coach Franz Pumaren. “But if you look at the game, we were trailing 75% of the time. The boys showed their poise, they showed that we didn’t panic despite the runs that UP made.”
“We survived, that’s the bottom line,” he added. “We were lucky to survive this game.”
In Saturday’s game on September 29, Adamson shall face the host, National University, in the first game, which kicks off at 1:00 p.m. at the FilOil Flying V Centre followed by the Ateneo-UST battle at 4:00 p.m. Mervin Vince C. Lopez
