Another Adamsonian student has made waves in sports when she won several championships in three tournaments held in different locations in the country.
Jarel Renz Lacambra, a Grade 11 student emerged as Champion and also earned a silver medal in the Under 16 Girls category during the elimination round of the National Age Group Chess Championships, Luzon Leg, held in Iba, Zambales last April 18-28, 2018. This round was open to all and the top 3 winners became qualified to represent Luzon in the grand finals.
The championship did bring Lacambra to her next challenge – the National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals held in Roxas City, Capiz last May 5-12, 2018. Again, she came out as Champion in the Under 16 Girls category, beating fellow chess players from the Visayas and Mindanao.
Lacambra’s win in the grand finals brought her further to the Asean+Age-Group Chess Championships 2018, which was held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City last June18-28, 2018. Contestants from Asean and other countries battled it out for the top plums but it was Lacambra who showed mettle and great skills in her category. She won convincingly, bringing home the Rapid Chess Gold both in the individual category and in the team category (with Team Philippines).
Jarel Renz Lacambra was mentored and assisted by Adamson’s long-time chess team coach Christopher Rodriguez.
The Philippines was this year’s host. The games were organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and sanctioned by the Philippine Sports Commission.
The Adamson community proudly congratulates Lacambra on her remarkable showing in the three tournaments.
