Adamson University held its 80th Commencement Exercises at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Plenary Hall last May 4, 2018. A Baccalaureate Mass preceded the ceremonies for the 1,696 graduating students.
As tradition goes, the commencement exercises was divided into two sessions to accommodate all the graduates. The morning session was for those coming from the Graduate School, College of Architecture, College of Engineering, and the College of Science. Fr. William Azul D. Encelan, C.M., director of the Campus Ministry Office, was the main celebrant of the Baccalaureate Mass. University Registrar Prof. Emilia M. Vicencio presented the candidates for graduation while Faye Avegail F. Villegas, a BS Computer Engineering graduate, Cum Laude, gave the Address of Petition for the conferment of degrees.
The keynote speaker for the first batch of graduates was Dr. Maria Socorro L. Agcaoili-de Jesus, M.D., a BS Biology alumna who graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2000. She is now a Fellow of the Philippine College of Medicine, a Diplomate of the Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, a clinical associate professor at the University of the Philippines - Manila, and a medical practitioner.
In her speech, Dr. Agcaoili-de Jesus recalled her hardships as a financially struggling student with a desire to learn. A daughter of a teacher, she always had the perseverance to study hard and maximize the opportunity given to her as an academic scholar, both in her undergraduate program and medicine proper. She said that it took her 18 years of struggles, challenges, opportunities, and nonstop learning before she was given the honor to speak in front of a graduating class.
On behalf of the graduating class, BS Information Technology graduate, Cum Laude, Allen Nicole P. Bagaporo, delivered the Address of Thanks.
In the afternoon session, the graduates from the College of Law, College of Business Administration, College of Education and Liberal Arts, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy received their respective degrees. The baccalaureate mass was celebrated by Institute for Religious Education (IRED) director Fr. Rock Joseph Enriquez, C.M. The Address of Petition for the conferment of degrees was given by Ma. Denisse E. Cayetano, Bachelor of Secondary Education graduate, Magna Cum Laude.
The keynote speaker for the afternoon session was former University of the Philippines System President and UP Diliman College of Business Administration Professor Emeritus Emerlinda R. Roman, PhD. Dr. Roman was also the first woman president of the UP System which she served from 2005 to 2011. She gave the graduating class a glimpse of their possible journey through their lives outside the university and into the real world. She called upon the graduates to be law-abiding, morally upright, and involved citizens of society to make it a brighter place with the torches they carry as fresh graduates.
Dina D. Derla, a BSBA Financial Management graduate, Summa Cum Laude and batch valedictorian, gave the Address of Thanks on behalf of the graduating students.
Both batches of graduates pledged their alumni oath before Engr. Hubert Q. Temprosa, president of Adamson University Alumni Association, Inc.
