Adamson University, through the Integrated Community Extension Services (ICES), partnered with the Public Affairs Ministry of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) to hold a Forum on Federalism and Charter Change at the Ozanam AVR last February 28, 2018.
Dr. Carol Pagaduan-Araullo, medical doctor and social activist, facilitated the talk on federalism and charter change for the attendees coming from different parishes and ministries under Social Services. Also present were some Moro-Christian group members. After the insightful talk, the attendees participated in activities planned for them, including group sharing.
Mr. Jojo Roberto, a lay coordinator from RCAM, explained that the forum is relevant because of the ever-growing discussions and debates on the possible implementation of federalism in the Philippines. Unfortunately, often times, these forums only discuss the change in the form of government, but not the change in the provisions included in the present constitution that is vital to the interest of the Filipino people.
He also stressed that political dynasties are also a part of the problem, and the root of it all is that the country is too undeveloped to attempt such changes; it is not the type of government that is the problem. He explained that whatever happens, the Catholic Church will remain the same, and will continue to promote justice and peace with respect to their movement against tyranny that is connected to the extrajudicial killings they are actively advocating against.
As for other projects similar to this forum, Fr. Atilano “Nonong” G. Fajardo, CM, minister for the Public Affairs Ministry of the RCAM and the director of ICES, plans to hold forums every month regarding social issues affecting our country. This forum will serve as a trailblazer for future events, seeing as it is the RCAM’s first attempt regarding federalism. The goal is to cascade the information to different parishes within the boundaries of the RCAM and encourage all Catholics in the country to utilize critical thinking strategies and be careful of the people they trust to lead the country.
