Adamson University, through the Office for Student Affairs (OSA), hosted the #IMSocial: The GMA News Think Before You Click and YouScoop Sessions last January 18, 2018 at the Adamson University Theater. This advocacy for the responsible use of social media has been making the rounds of universities in Metro Manila and had its stop at Adamson on the aforementioned date.

The forum tackled the most relevant issues that this generation is facing, particularly in the field of social media, such as its irresponsible use, fake news, and cyber crime laws.

In her opening speech, Dr. Catherine Q. Castañeda, VP for Academic Affairs, highlighted the importance of keeping up with the current issues in order to be frontrunners of intelligent thinking and reasonable planning. “The strength of character and conviction lies in one’s unwavering stand on critical issues of the day, up to now, when news are not properly and substantially provided with facts and figures,” she said.

The first speaker, GMA news anchor Pia Arcangel, talked about GMA News’ advocacy “Think before you click” and discussed important reminders when using and dealing with social media. She discussed the recent social media issues that transpired locally and internationally. She emphasized the value of truthfulness, accuracy, and fairness when posting on social media. She also reminded the students to be very careful about the things they post online.

The Adamson University Acoustic Band played a number before the presentation of the next speaker.

Atty. Jan Nelin M. Navallasca, OSA director, discussed matters regarding the Cyber Crime Law.

Mr. Justin Joyas on the other hand explained further the issue regarding fake news and its advent in social media.

Lastly, Ms. Audrey Mae Domasian discussed the program of GMA News called YouScoop – a citizen journalism platform that utilizes the use of social media in newsgathering.
