Program Overview and Curriculum

Bachelor of Science in Biology is a four-year undergraduate degree program that equip students with strong foundation in biological science and the skills necessary to build careers in the industry, academe, research and business. While the program focuses on disciplines like molecular biology, microbial ecology, biodiversity and ecology, it is also designed to maximize students’ hands-on experience by the inclusion of an On-the-Job Training (OJT) in premier research institutes and companies, locally and abroad.

Vision and Mission

Vision: The Biology Department, College of Science, Adamson University strives to achieve the status of a National Center of Excellence in Biology, in the area of Biodiversity and Microbiology.

Mission:

  • To provide state-of-the-art undergraduate and graduate education in pure and applied biology through world class capabilities;
  • To carry out advanced research in established and emerging areas of biological sciences;
  • To perform biology-related extension services geared at national scientific and technology development in the Spirit of Vincentian Charity; and
  • To foster academic and research linkages with local and foreign scientific institutions.

Goals: The BS Biology Program aims to develop individuals equipped with scientific competence for future professional study and the social conscience that will and motivate them to continuously seek ways and means to improve the living conditions of marginalized Filipino people through science and technology.

The program allows diversified exposure to Biology based on the different aspects of biological organization—biological, cellular, physiological, and ecological. Aside from the prescribed basic courses in Botany, Zoology, Cell and Molecular Biology and Biostatistics, the curriculum requires the students to pass the five core areas, namely, Genetics, Morphology, Physiology, Systematics and Ecology, prior to undertaking research methods for the undergraduate thesis. The thesis is designed to expose and teach the students methods necessary to solve problems in biology and to train them to conduct independent research. Course strategies emphasize environment concerns, as well as awareness of the impact of biomedical services on social order and Filipino values and attitudes.

Graduates of the program have been adequately prepared to pursue careers and/or specialized studies and research in the fields of Botany, Zoology, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biodiversity. The program is also designed to provide the 24-unit requirement needed to take the Microbiology Board Examination.
