Fr. Gregorio L. Bañaga, CM, Adamson University President Emeritus, was installed as the new Provincial Visitor for the Philippine Province of the Congregation of the Mission, at the Verandas de San Vicente in Tandang Sora, Quezon City on June 14, 2017. The ceremony was attended by confreres, representatives of the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentian Family, some Adamson University administrators and friends.

Fr. Bañaga, who became the tenth Filipino Provincial Visitor, studied at the St. Vincent Seminary in Valenzuela, Bulacan. He graduated with an A.B. in Philosophy from Adamson University. He continued his studies in Theology at the University of Santo Thomas and his doctoral studies at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. After several years of conducting popular missions in the rural provinces, such as in Rizal, Bataan, Camarines Sur, and Pangasinan, he was assigned to the St. Vincent School of Theology and spent the next four years teaching.

He was then assigned to Adamson University and served as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Vice President of Administration. In 2003, he became the first Adamson alumnus to serve as the University President. Under his guidance, the University reached various milestones including the IQUAME program and ISO accreditations, and being granted Autonomous Status by the Commission on Higher Education.

In his 12 years as University President, more than being a visionary in bringing the University to the 21st century, Fr. Bañaga was also known for his compassionate leadership, reconnecting the University to its Vincentian mission and heritage and maximizing service opportunities and programs for members of the Adamson community. He was also elected president of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, overseeing more than 1,300 Catholic schools.

In 2016, he was conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by DePaul University, another Vincentian academic institution.

With the Province of the Philippines under Fr. Bañaga’s guidance, the Congregation stands to gain a lot. Being the oldest elected Provincial Visitor at the age of 63, the former Adamson president brings an array of experiences to the table, not just as a priest and a missionary, but also as an educational administrator and innovator.
