Comm Department celebrate a busy summer with major awards

The Communication Department under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences made the best of the school year’s end after AB Communication students won numerous awards in four different events.
Their winning streak began in the previous semester when two groups of Communication students won podium finishes in the CEMEX Impact 1st Student’s Festival held on November 15, 2015 in Pasig City. Emerging as festival champions in the Public Service Announcement (PSA) Video Making Competition were Praises Gem Apostol, Rennel Bayan, Margaret Anne Chiong, Ronald Nas, and Jayson Pazziuagan. Their fellow Comm students Joshua Arimado, Joymae Comendador, Allaine Jet Leonardo, Charmishane Pagayon, and John Henry Tolentino were among the finalists in the same category.
Next came AdSpeak 2016, a student competition on values advertising hosted by the Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Advertising Board of the Philippines with Advertising Foundation of the Philippines as co-presentor. Comm students won awards in six categories, which was given during the awarding ceremony held on March 4, 2016 in Letran.
Four groups of Adamsonians won awards in AdSpeak’s Values Advertising Awards. Winning Best Campaign PSA were Marian Carmelo, Bob Eruel Chavez, and Karen Garcitos while Cherrylyn Illumin, Joshua Gabrielle Serrano, and Pamela Joyce Silverio won Best TV PSA. Notching second runner-up honors were Jemimah Damina, Zabrina Kate-Lynn Tarrega, and Danesa Paolo Trazo in the TV PSA category and Aloyssus Pierre Angelo Ramos, Kimberly Joyce Ramoso, and Mikaela Macantan in the Print PSA category. In the Online Choice Awards, Christine Joy Romero, Aubrey Mechaela Solis, and Josephus Jules Vivas won Best Campaign PSA while Charieline Bañares, Cherrylyn Illumin, Patrino Libiran, and Shiella Mae Perez won first runner-up honors in the Best in Branded Communications category.
The winning streak continued at the PODCON 2016 Student Awards held on April 18 to 20 at the University of Santo Tomas. AdU received nine awards in the competition, including Best DJ honors for Solis and Arimado. Ma. Kamille Andrea Quiniano was named second best female DJ. Other awards won were Best Radio DJ and Fan Favorite Radio DJ for #Nosibalasi, Second Best Radio DJ for The Jay and Kaye Show, Third Best Radio Drama for Pipinoy, Third Best Radio Documentary for Wanted: Platform, Fan Favorite Radio Drama for E-leksyon, and Fan Favorite Radio Documentary for Botante.
The winners of CEMEX, AdSpeak, and PODCON were mentored by faculty members Ms. Ailene Ayson and Mr. Carl Christianne Dizon.
The department also made an impact in the 2nd World Conference on Media and Mass Communication 2016 held on April 21 and 22 in Bangkok, Thailand. Carl Andrei Marasigan was recognized as the Overall Best Student Presenter and the Best Session Presenter for the Media Platform and Genre Studies Session for his research study A Content Analysis on the Banner Headlines of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, and the Philippine Star on the Mamasapano Incident. Marasigan was mentored by another faculty member, Mr. Joel Zaporteza.
Also presenting at the conference were Mr. Marc Pacoma, Communication Department chairperson, who presented his study Promoting Tubercolosis Health Literacy through TV Infomercial and students Jean Lery Belarmino and Althea Cañaga presented An Analysis on Female Commodification in Non-Liquor Television Commercials: Basis for Proposed Guidelines for Advertising. Belarmino and Cañaga were mentored also by Mr. Zaporteza.
This semester’s harvest of awards follows last semester’s haul, where Comm students also won several awards in national and scholastic competitions. The Communication department is certainly proud of their Adamsonian communicators’ achievements, which continue their tradition of consistently winning in the numerous competitions they join.
