Foreign Languages Department

The Department of Foreign Languages is an arm of the College of Liberal Arts that takes care of the linguistic and communication instruction of all University students. Being a service department, it provides services to all students enrolled in English, Spanish and Nihongo courses.

The department is composed of 36 highly experienced and qualified faculty members majority of which have finished their Master and Doctoral degrees.

The department in its adherence to academic excellence has several relevant and interesting programs to help students develop language proficiency and provides the much needed facilities that will make teaching and learning more dynamic and meaningful. Here are some interesting facts:

  • It manages, assists, and guides students enrolled in the AB Mass Communication course. There are about 700 students enrolled in this degree program.
  • It maintains three laboratories namely:
    1. The Speech laboratories.
      There are two speech laboratories featuring the latest gadgets for oral communication exercises and drills. These laboratories service all the freshmen and sophomores enrolled in Basic English courses and Speech and Oral Communication subject. Up-dated speech materials are used to enhance and enrich students learning a second language.
    2. The Regis Clet laboratory
      This laboratory serves as a venue for Public Speaking students where they are given lessons in public delivery and group discussions. Speeches and oral exercises are made available to students for them to imitate and to serve as models for spoken deliveries.

      Likewise, literature students use this laboratory as a place for film viewing of relevant movies to supplements their literary experiences taken from books. Classic films about Greek mythology and contemporary films relevant to the time are shown to students to further enrich their literary and life experiences.
  • It manages the Media Center for the exclusive use of Mass Communication students. This laboratory is a studio-type venue where Radio, TV, and drama workshop are held. The center has a film editing facility where the students with the professor's guide edit their TV films before actual film presentation. The venue becomes a place of diverse interrelated mass communication activities meant to hone the students skills in their chosen field of expertise.
  • The Department of Foreign Languages offers a special English course called EEP or English Enrichment Program to interested students and outsiders who want to improve their fluency in spoken English. This course is good for 50 hours and is handled by highly trained professors in Communication. The course uses the communicative technique and approach using interactive activities in the lesson to give students the opportunity to speak in English.
  • The Department also offers an Intensive English Course as part of its tie-up with PLDT to prepare graduating senior students who wish to make a career in the Call Center Industry after graduation. This course paves the way for students to get a good paying job in PLDT after having passed the screening procedures. The course is a vehicle for graduating students who already have the basic potentials in communication to intensify their skills in grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, and the use of the standard American accent in speaking. It also touches lessons in American culture and geography and proper and efficient customer service. As a whole, the course prepares a graduating student to get a good job as a call center agent/representative.
Specific Objectives
  1. To introduce students to the various forms of Mass Communication, their organizations and operations.
  2. To train students in the acquisition of working knowledge and skills in preparation for actual work in Mass Media.
  3. To train students in the application of basic principles and techniques of communication relevant to the production of newspapers, radio and television programs, and advertisements.
  4. To equip students with the necessary skills in the conduct of Mass Communication surveys and researches.
  5. To encourage students to understand the legal responsibilities and limitations of Filipino print broadcast media, thereby helping them clarify their own ethical framework.
  6. To develop awareness and appreciation among students of the values of honesty, hard work efficiency and fair play.
