Adamsonian sixth-grader Daryl Unix Samantila shared top honors with Ynna Sophia Canape with a score of 5.5 each as they ruled the Intermediate and Beginner section of the Milo CheckMate Young Knights League held recently at Eton Cyberpod in Pasig City last December 29 and 30, 2010.
A total of 44 players competed in the said section while 24 players competed in the Open Division which included Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So, who ruled the premier section of the Young Knights League.
The tournament was exclusive to those who attended the Milo CheckMate program since it was offered in 1990. Samantila attended Checkmate in 2007.
Samantila also topped the 12-under category in second leg of the Bulacan Youth Chess Federation Chess Tournament (grand prix format) held last January 15. Twenty-nine players joined the event, mostly students from Bulacan’s public and private schools. Samantila consistently topped the boards, scoring a perfect 6.0 and besting some of Bulacan’s Palarong Pambansa bets.
With this win, he and the other category champions and runners-up of this event will play in the grand finals to be held in June 2010.
