Fr. Gestie Advincula, C.M., Mayor Ruth Uy Asmundson, and Dr. Carmen Lamagna, all alumni of Adamson University, are among the 200-plus overseas Filipinos featured in the book “Mga Bagong Bayani – Inspiring Filipinos Overseas (Book One). The book was launched in Hong Kong last June 8, 2008.
The book features Filipinos overseas from 50 countries as well as around 60 pages of the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Trek (Book One). Enrique Sadiosa, the publisher, and his team retraced the Philippine National Hero’s footsteps around the world. Started in 1999, the book is the longest, most-traveled, and well-researched documentary on Filipinos abroad and took eight years to finish. A sequel is in the works.
Fr. Gestie (AB Philo ’76) is the Filipino Vincentian priest in Beirut who, during the 2006 war between Israel and the Hezbollah, extended extraordinary assistance to Filipino workers caught in the crossfire. Ruth Uy Asmundson (BS Chem ’64) is the Mayor of Davis City, California whose contributions to the city’s progress are in the area of business, arts and culture, and relations with sister cities in the Philippines. Carmen Lamagna (BS Chem. Eng. ’78) is the Vice-Chancellor of the American International University in Bangladesh and has significant contributions both as an educator and as a manager. The three were among the “75 Outstanding Adamsonians” named during the Diamond Jubilee of Adamson University in 2007.
