The Adamson University Mathematics Society (AUMS) gathered 40 competing teams for the 5th Inter-High School Math’inik last January 23, 2009 at the University’s OZ-AVR.
Eighty high school math wizards from Ateneo de Manila University, Philippine Science High School-Main Campus, Chiang Kai Shek College, Ramon Magsaysay High School - Cubao, St. Stephen High School, together Year 3 Champion Rizal Experimental Station and Pilot School of Cottage Industries, to name a few, filled the small venue ready to take on questions and problems. Started at 10:00 a.m., the elimination round consisting of a written exam was ruled by Russel Virata of Gideon Academy who emerged as the top scorer.
At 2:00 p.m., the stimulating semi-final and final rounds were a blast to Team 1 of Philippine Science High School, led by Amiel Sy and Jose Enrico, as it consistently outdid all the teams and was hailed Year 5 Champion. Philippine Science High School Team 2 pulled a come-from-behind victory when Elvis Jeremy Ayroso and Stephen Jann Tamayo correctly answered the last question, enough for them to get the 1st Runner-Up spot. Russell Virata and Seung Bem Lee, Team 1 of Gideon Academy, were named 2nd Runner Up.
The awards consisted of trophies for the schools, medals and certificates for the students and coaches, and cash prizes. The activity was supported by the University’s Mathematics Department and sponsored by the Registrar’s Office and “Your Own Art.” Dominic Karganilla
