Gary Lazaro, Campaign Coordinator for AR NOW! People’s Campaign for Agrarian Reform Network, has written to University President Fr. Greg Bañaga Jr., C.M. expressing gratitude for the “support and generosity” extended by the University for the Sumilao, Banasi, Calatagan, Quezon, Romblon and Bulacan farmers marching for the passage of Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms (CARPER).
Speaking in behalf of the of the organizing committtee of Lupang Hinirang, Lupang Hinarang: The Farmers’ Pilgrimage for CARP Extension with Reforms, Lazaro appreciates the University’s support and assistance as “a genuine expression of solidarity and truly being one with the rural poor in restoring their dignity and in asserting their rights to own the land for common good.”
Most of the farmers have already returned to their respective hometowns but twenty-five farmers have remained in Metro Manila to continue with their mission. The farmers’ activities include educational forums, information campaigns, and signature gathering for the CARPER. The group also plans to organize and mobilize other groups for a mass action in time for Congress’ opening on April 13.
