Engr. Juanito Chan, a faculty member of the IE Department, presented a research paper titled “Improving Product Handling Process to Reduce Losses of the Fresh Tomato Produce” in the Engineering Research Conference 2009 held last March 9-12, 2009 at the Bayview Park Hotel, Manila. The conference theme was “Forging Synergistic Partnerships with the Global Industry through Market Driven Research Initiatives.” Usually attended by engineers from the academe and practitioners from different industries who share research studies that become part of a well-run technology, the gathering was hosted by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Sponsors were the Department of Science and Technology, National Research Council of the Philippines, Department of Energy, PCIERD and PCASTRD.
Chan's paper is a faculty-student collaborative research led by Engr. Chan himself, with co-authors Katleya Andal, Mark Bryan Santos, Jonalyn Susa, and Engr. Venusmar Quevedo. It aimed to identify the possible causes of agricultural product losses for the tomato produce. It also recommended appropriate solutions in handling materials, and transportation guidelines. The proposed guidelines will help reduce losses of agricultural produce particularly tomatoes and correspondingly increase the revenues of the farmers.
