Adamson’s young chess master Daryl Unix Samantila has again captured several championship berths over the past few months, handily beating his opponents with record scores. In the Mayor Libunao Cup II-Pista’y Dayat Age Group Rapid Chess Championship held last May 2-3, 2009 at San Fabian in Pangasinan, Samantila ruled the 10-under category with a perfect 7.0 score. Participants from northern and central Luzon provinces such as Bulacan, La Union, Nueva Viscaya, Tarlac, Pangasinan, and Baguio City played in this event.
Samantila won again in the NCFP Director Manuel Relorcasa Age-Group Chess Tournament, a seven-leg event held all over the National Capital Region, with the final tournament to be staged in December, where he has captured the 10-under category championship of this tournament twice. Samantila won the first and second leg, held last June 12 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City, and last July 25 at the Knights of Columbus center in Makati City. He defeated participants from other schools with a 6.5 out of 7 points on the first leg and a perfect score of 5.0 in the second leg.
Samantila is a fifth grader at the Basic Education Department of Adamson University.
