As the first semester closes in on the finish, two more sports proclaim their champions as the first half of Season 72 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) also comes to a close.
University of Sto. Tomas (UST) prevented De La Salle University (DLSU) from having a double celebration as the España shuttlers battled DLSU 3-2 to win the men’s championship in badminton. La Salle had earlier defeated University of the East (UE) 3-1 in the women’s draw, where the last singles game was no longer played due to La Salle’s clear edge. Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University (FEU) settled for the bronze in the men’s and women’s games, respectively.
UST’s Salvador Kapunan and FEU’s Rochelle Reyes were declared Most Improved Players for the season while Anthony Gadi of Ateneo and Danica Bolos of DLSU were Rookies of the Year. The Most Valuable Players were Paolo Dawal of UST and Descka Calimlim of DLSU. The games were held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex Badminton Center in Manila.
Meanwhile, the dynamic duo of Angela Benting (BSBA Management) and Lizlee Ann Gata (BSBA Finance) dethroned Anna Camille Abanto and Marigail Tolentino of FEU to claim the gold in beach volleyball. Benting and Gata came out strong in the first set but slightly dipped in the second to let FEU in. The Lady Falcons eventually dumped Abanto and Tolentino 15-6 in the third set to seal the deal. DLSU, represented by Jacqueline Alarca and Charleen Cruz, settled for third place in the women’s draw. Benting was also declared as tournament MVP.
On the men’s side, UST gained another gold in the UAAP medal standings as they defeated FEU in straight sets, 22-20, 22-20. The beach volleyball tournament was held at the UE Caloocan campus.
