The Adamson Lady Falcons swept the UAAP Season 72 Women’s Basketball championship series via a 64-50 win over the FEU Lady Tamaraws at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan, Metro Manila last October 6, 2009.
Amby Almazan, who still has one more year to play for the school, led the determined flock of Falcons with double digit figures in points and rebounds ably supported by Anna Buendia who showed her own sizzling performance.
It was teamwork however that stifled FEU’s threat to bounce back in the third quarter when coach Emelia Vega told the girls to tighten their defense, thus limiting the opponents’ chances at making real baskets up to the fourth quarter.
What makes the Lady Falcons’ triumph doubly significant is that it was not just a championship win but also a masterful dethronement of the ruling queens, the Lady Tamaraws, who clearly lost the right to stay a minute longer on the throne.
But then again, the Lady Falcons are no strangers to the coveted place of honor. Their having been back-to-back champs in 2003 and 2004 just made the journey a sweet return to a rather familiar haunt. The victory is even sweeter as Almasan and Buendia were placed into the Mythical Five and with Almasan being declared as the Season and Finals MVP.
Meanwhile, the whole Adamson University community, including the alumni in every corner of the world, is celebrating the victory with much relish, coming as it does after hearing of the school’s flood-hit campus a week before. The victory lifts up the community’s spirit and inspires it to keep soaring always in spite of adversities just like a real falcon. -RDA
