Architecture students are usually known for the technical, nitty-gritty stuff—lines, calculations, measurements. Two young lads from the College of Architecture proved otherwise through with their knack for art and design as they bagged major honors during the 2nd Funkified Sneaker Design Competition 2009 held at TriNoma last October 31, 2009.
Luigi Apolinar won the grand prize while Romeo Zurita received a consolation prize at the on-the-spot design contest, held by the mall in time for their special mall-wide sneaker sale event. The two junior BS Architecture students competed with students from other schools such as Mapúa, UP and UST for the tilt, which had no set theme, thus allowing them to think out of the box and let their own ideas come to life.
Apolinar turned a scratch canvas into a colorful, forward-thinking psychedelic shoe design and comes off as playful. Zurita, on the other hand, got his inspiration from the late Ninoy Aquino’s iconic eyeglasses to show off his nationalistic side.
The boys are proud of their wins as it boosted their confidence and are aware of the good opportunities that these kinds of contests bring. Zurita further encourages his fellow artistic youngsters, telling people that they should learn how to step out of the shadow and they will be surprised to discover new things from themselves. He determinedly added that there’s nothing to lose in trying. Maricris Gali
