Date Posted: Feb 14, 2010 at 06:01:55 AM
The Adamson University Chemical Engineering Toastmasters Club has reasons to celebrate the coming of 2010 after two of its members swept honors in a recent competition.
The speaking abilities of the ChE students honed the Toastmasters way was proven last December 5, 2009 when two members won in the Speech Contests of the 4th Achievers' Rookies Invitational Cup held at the Makati Stock Exchange Building in Makati City. John Lester L. Morillo, a 4th year ChE student, won first runner-up in the International Prepared Speech category while Melody Jay D. Ison, a recent ChE graduate, also won as first runner-up in the Impromptu Speech Contest.
The twin victories were definitely a big boost for Morillo and Ison and for the club, as the two delegates were the youngest among the contestants and their contenders being professionals already.
Toastmasters International is a worldwide non-profit organization helping people become more competent and confident in front of an audience. There are currently more than 12,500 clubs in 106 countries and it continues to grow as it fulfills its goal of honing the communication and leadership skills of people young and old alike.
The ChE Falcons Toastmasters Club is comprised of twenty ChE students who meet every Saturday for two hours. The members’ skills are enhanced as they participate during meetings, taking part either in the communication or in the leadership projects. Seasoned Toastmasters come to devote their time, effort and knowledge in evaluating each student’s participation in the Table Topics and Prepared Speeches as well as their assigned roles as Toastmaster of the Day, Table Topics Master, Grammarian, Ah-Counter, Timer, among other activities so as to inspire and motivate them. These activities also help students overcome the fears, the jitters and the difficulty in speaking in English or simply in expressing themselves.
It was a dream come true when AdU ChE Falcons Toastmasters Club was finally chartered last June 29, 2009. The first-ever Toastmasters Club in Adamson University was born through the initiative of Toastmaster ChE alumnus, Engr. Marife A. Lacsamana, ACB, ALB with the assistance of her former classmate Engr. Santi S. Lim and the generosity of co-alumnus Engr. Manny Wong.
Everyone, from school employees, professors to students of any course aged 18 years old and above, is invited to join the club. Simply attend one of their meetings every Saturday at 2:00-4:00 PM at OZ302 and see what Toastmasters can do for you.
